Alien Breed and the Evolution of Gaming http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/64/AlienBreedandtheEvolutionofGaming/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/64/AlienBreedandtheEvolutionofGaming/ Sun, 29 Apr 2012 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming How the 'Evolution of gaming' has come along in 20 years!

Upon stumbling across one of my all time favourite game remakes, Alien Breed, I couldn't help but think of those great arcade years playing on the Amiga with my Dad.
There was nothing like a good two player top down 'shoot em up'.

Ok, so you had to wait for the game to load off the notoriously unreliable floppy disks, but boy was it worth the wait.

The way in which games has moved on over the years is astounding.
Taking Team17's Alien Breed as an example, you can see just how far things have come since the good old arcade days.

The formula for the game remains the same simple, yet highly addictive formula. Run around a space station in cramped conditions, trying to navigate a maze of rooms and corridors while fending off the invading Aliens.
However, what has changed dramatically is the graphics, effects and sheer depth.

Loading from a floppy waiting to read the opening credits still had a depth of excitement that a book or wooden toy couldn't quite match for me.
Physically seeing the story someone had envisaged and being part of the story by playing the character yourself was far more entertaining.
However, the latest games really have gone to a new level.

Looking at how the great 1992 special edition version of Alien Breed had the opening plot line, Team17 have stuck to those roots and built upon this in the latest re-make.
Just take a look at the videos below, one of the original and the other of the new re-make and see how far things have come in the last 20 years.

It's great to see this comparison since Team17 have kept the original so close to heart.
The intro is just another example, from a static image in the 90's to an almost film like cinematic.
Ok so it's not quite like a GTAV cut scene or a Forza Motorsport replay, but we using a direct comparison here.
The in game effects are even kept similar in may ways, the original bullets hitting the aliens showing some early 'special effects'. Now those are still there, just using new particle effects the latest graphics cards allow.
It doesn't stop there either, why use a generic death animation when you can use rag doll effects? GTAIV shows this off really well when driving into dustbins and pedestrians and seeing them tumble.
Then there's all the clever lighting effects making things glare and shine, shadow rendering and some pretty jaw dropping graphical marvels.

It's hard to say where things will go from here, you only have to look at the last few years of Wii, Playstation Move and now the simply mind blowing Xbox Kinect to start your mind wondering off on a tangent.
What about mixing the 2Pac hologram that appeared on stage along side Snoop Dog, with the Xbox Kinect? The mind boggles. ]]>

For those of you who do, you might be wondering "where is the OnLive iPad or iPhone App?". And you are not alone.

We have been talking to OnLive to find out when OnLive will be released for iOS on the App Store.
We are told there is no App yet for the iPhone, however from what we understand, the App is actually pretty much fully developed for the iPad and going through the process of approval with Apple.

The Official OnLive statement:
"...when we did announce our playable tablets in December, we announced versions for Android tablets and smartphones and for the iPad."

"The Android version for tablets and smartphones is available... but the iPad version is still going through the approval process with Apple."

As we know from past experience, the approval process with Apple can take some time due to the complexities of such programs.
We would imagine it may need to go through a few more development cycles and last minute amends before it can be released to the public, but rest assured the guys at OnLive are pushing for the iPad release.

If you can't wait for the release of the iOS iPad OnLive App on the App Store, you can play right now on any Windows PC, Mac and most Android based tablets and smart phones.

At first look the visuals are truly stunning. It appears the cut scenes and game are well merged together, showing how technology has moved forward since the last Max Payne outting. Rockstar may well use the new face mapping and lip sync they used for Red Dead Redemption. If they have this will add a whole new level of immersion to the story line.

I still class the first two Max Payne games are pretty impressive games and remember how much the story line (especially the first game) gripped me and the unique 'bullet time' mode added such fun to the game.

Expect to see all the good old features like diving backwards and unleashing some slow motion carnage, as well as online multiplayer! As for how the Max Payne 3 Multi Player feature will work is unknown.

The graphics are really impressive, with some really nice particle effects. It looks like the bullet holes and scenery destruction are a step on from previous titles. See the video for more information:

Max Payne 3 looks to be another stunning and action packed game from Rockstar. We will need to wait until March to find out for sure!

Dead Island Review http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/54/DeadIslandReview/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/54/DeadIslandReview/ Sat, 17 Sep 2011 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming
So is it any good and should you buy it?

Well from what we found it's a great game if you love smashing zombies to bits!

The story is also very good, the feeling of 'Lost' combined with the brutality of 'Dead Rising'.
Only this is no vacation and certainly more challenging that Dead Rising!

The story starts you off on an island funny enough, where you will have to fend of zombies with what ever you can get your hands on.

We especially love the blunt items you can break the poor zombies arms and legs with, super fun. For those of you who like to slide and dice, there is always a trusty clever or knife to chop off limbs too.
Further into the game you will come across guns too, though not all that effective on the zombies they come in handy for the rebel humans!

In all this game is really something, with great graphics (though could have been a little better in this day and age) and a huge environment to explore.

Here's what one of our HollettGaming friends has to say:

"This game is amazing. Beautiful landscapes. The game hits it were you want it to. See zombie blood all over! Every aspect of the game is good besides the rate ur weapons deteriorate..like a heavy pipe, I dont care how many peaople's skulls you hit with that sucker, it aint bending.."
Dave Ikonov

He's got a point there, the weapons don't last all that long, however noting that there are plenty of tool benches around the map to repair or upgrade them. You can even combine items found to make even more crazy weapons.

So, should you buy it or not?
Yes.

OnLive is set for launch in the UK on the 22nd September at the Eurogamer Expo 2011.

So what is OnLive?
OnLive is a revolutionary way of playing games with an internet connection, a cloud based gaming service. All you need is a PC/Mac or a TV and OnLive TV adaptor. Your internet connection will need to be up to speed of course too.

Pricing looks to be similar to that of the full priced hard copy, though you can also rent or trial them at similar costs to that of renting from Blockbuster. OnLive will also be giving out free microconsoles at the Eurogamer Expo in September, worth popping in dont you think? The only snag we see is that you still need to pay a monthly subscription fee, but at least you don't need to buy every new console that comes out to play the latest games.

You can find out more about OnLive at there website www.onlive.com

Game Review - Desert Operations http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/49/GameReview-DesertOperations/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/49/GameReview-DesertOperations/ Sun, 20 Feb 2011 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Desrt Ops Flash Game Review: Desert Operations

We came across a great online game we thought we would share with you.
Desert Operations is an online browser based game, based around military actions.

First impressions of the game are superb, as you sign in and start to build up your first town. It features an easy to use and slick interface.
The game features some beautiful visuals and nice 3D animations, the makers look to have spent some time on creating these great buildings and terrain.

The game kind of reminds me of a mixture of Sim City 3000 and Command and Conquer, the military elements taken from the later, with the diplomatic and management side from Sim City.

Desrt Ops
All this helps to create a truly immerse world. It does take some time to build up your empire, but there are ways of helping you along your way. There is a chat bar at bottom to interact with others and also an Alliance area you can view global alliances, form diplomatic relations or start  wars. There are some great alliances, some guys are really helpful and can get you going as a noob, sharing some of there knowledge with you.

New players to the game are protected from attack until they attack someone or they reach a certain level. This certainly helps to keep you out of trouble until you grow big enough for someone to want a piece of your empire!

Of course, building up your army and empire requires resources, you can mine the land and gain money from your population. It's also possible to buy and sell resources, oil, gold, ammunition and so on between you and other players, or if you really need some resources theres always the black market (though this will cost you!).

In all the game gets a thumbs up from us, if you like strategy on a large scale, this is the game for you.

The rise of online gaming http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/45/Theriseofonlinegaming/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/45/Theriseofonlinegaming/ Wed, 25 Aug 2010 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Poker Image It's not just kids that enjoy playing games. We all need a little distraction every now and then. Games are not only a release, they can test our reactions, our logical thinking and our imaginations. Now that we can play games online, more and more people are getting involved. Whether it's a five-minute distraction during lunch hour or an afternoon playing a complicated strategy, the growth in game playing has been astronomical in the past decade.

According to Ofcom's recent report 'The Communications Market 2010', 39% of Internet users in the UK now play online games. This makes it the most popular form of media consumption in the country.

This in an increase of 1% on the same time last year, which pushes gaming ahead of film and music downloads. Overall, the British public spends nine hours a day using media in some form, from watching TV in the evening to using the internet at work and playing a game via the web from their smartphone on the way home from the office. It seems we need to stay connected to the wider world in any shape or form.

There are now vast numbers of websites that are dedicated to online gaming, but as the market explodes, other sites, not traditionally gaming sites, are adding gaming sections, particularly the large social networking sites like Facebook. Even advertising is using games as a way to draw customers in to a particular product or service.

Earlier this year Google celebrated the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man, one of the most popular and addictive games of all time. The search engine had a 'Google doodle' allowing users to play for free as many times as they liked, steering their icon around a Google shaped maze.

There are so many different types of games to choose from these days. You can play traditional arcade games online from the comfort of your lounge or office chair during your lunch break. Many sites offer the classics such as Space Invaders, Donkey Kong and the Prince of Persia.

There are skill games too that test your memory, coordination, reactions and logical thinking. But there are just as many games that are designed purely for fun. If you're good at them you can even gamble a little. For example, 32 Red offer online bingo with regular monthly offers and £10 worth of free credit when you sign up.

Development Update http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/42/DevelopmentUpdate/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/42/DevelopmentUpdate/ Fri, 25 Jun 2010 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Poker Image Development continues on the new Virtual Airliner 2.

The aircraft physics have been updated to give more of a difference in flight control between planes. Thought the overall look will remain as it was in the first Virtual Airliner, there is now an ability to fly in all directions so you will need to master not only altitude and speed, but also rotation!

There are two planes currently coded, a light Cessna and a heavy 747.  Expect the light aircraft to be nimble and easy to control, but the heavy aircraft to be less manoeuvrable and a little tricker to handle.

The overall map is complete, with a few different islands to transport passengers to and from. Work will continue on populating the islands with buildings and other scenery next, then on to constructing the other in game elements such as purchase of planes and population management of the islands airports.

New aircraft will also be added, any suggestions are welcome. Drop us a message on our contact page.]]>

Finding the Right Table http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/41/FindingtheRightTable/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/41/FindingtheRightTable/ Thu, 24 Jun 2010 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Poker Image Online poker has grown massively in popularity in recent years, and through the growth of online poker the game itself has enjoyed something of a renaissance. If you enjoy playing a few hands of poker every now and then with your friends and fancy playing a few games online, here’s a quick guide to finding the right website for you.

The first thing to bear in mind is that there are new companies popping up every day, the vast majority are legitimate, but there are always a few who will be looking to make a quick bit of money and won’t necessarily be playing by the rules. Look for the eCOGRA sign on any website that you look at, eCOGRA stands for eCommerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance and they regulate the online gaming industry, any respectable online casino will have the eCOGRA sign front and centre.

The next thing to think about is that before you hand over money you’ve got to make sure you enjoy it. Most good websites will offer people the opportunity to try their tables or to try their games for free or for very little money, or even provide a certain amount of cash up front to new members to experiment with the games. Don’t just open an account and deposit money without trying out the games first.

Connected to this, you have to be sure that the tables you are playing are legitimate and safe. There has been a lot in the media in recent months and years about online casinos not offering fair odds. Any company that has been accused at any point of cheating its customers is probably one to steer clear of, a quick internet search of the name of the company should bring up any complaints, so make sure you steer clear of them.

The next thing is that you want to be sure that your money and your bank details are safe, so look for accreditation regarding money transfer systems, again, most responsible companies will be keen to assure you that your money is safe with them.

Finally, and this is by no means a necessity but it is a good idea, a good online casino like 32 Red have their commitment to responsible gaming demonstrated loud and proud on the front of their website. Gambling is addictive and you can lose large sums of money so look for a website that has a commitment to keep its customers safe, rather than solely looking to take their money.

World Cup Game Released http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/40/WorldCupGameReleased/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/40/WorldCupGameReleased/ Fri, 11 Jun 2010 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming
HollettGaming are proud to announce the first of a new series of games called Soccer Skills.

In this version named 'England Edition', the World Cup theme has been picked as a quick mini game to play and see how many goals you can score one on one against the keeper.

Future versions will have a full pitch and a full team to play with or against! At the moment the keeper is not all that good so you should be able to rack up the goals quite easily.

Inspirations have been taken from the old Amiga Classic Sensible World Of Soccer. All the graphics of the players and pitch have been hand drawn, pixel by pixel for each animation so that the players can easily have the skin, hair and shirt colours changed.

Expect new versions to come later in the year, but for now, see if you can get on that highscore table and let us know what you think of this first effectively beta version.

OnLive - Games on Demand http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/38/OnLive-GamesonDemand/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/38/OnLive-GamesonDemand/ Fri, 14 May 2010 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming
OnLive is set for launch in the US on the 17th June.

So what is OnLive?
OnLive is a revolutionary way of playing games with an internet connection. All you need is a PC/Mac or a TV and OnLive TV adaptor.

OnLive comes with it's own controller, but allows you to play any game anytime, regardless of the platform. No need to buy a new PS4 or Xbox370 should one be released! All the games are streamed to you using some unique compression technology.

The idea is to never have to buy a new console, and pick up any game any time all through your existing internet connection.

There is of course a subscription fee to pay to access the service, looking to be around $15 per month, BT have also invested in the technology, meaning it should be available to all UK broadband users (not just BT customers). I would image a fee of around £12 per month for the UK but this is just speculation.

In addition to the monthly fee, you need to still purchase the game to play the full version, though the portal does boast a big community with playable demos and videos.

You can find out more about OnLive at there website www.onlive.com

New Game in development http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/32/NewGameindevelopment/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/32/NewGameindevelopment/ Sat, 13 Mar 2010 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming HollettGaming are working on another new game.

The game idea was provided by Bhaavesh Patil, for a missile launcher to shoot at incoming planes.

Well, we took that idea and decided to expand on it a little.

The game will be in an isometric view with planes flying from right to left. They will attempt to bomb your city, you must protect it at all costs with your trusty SAM  (Surface to Air Missile) gunner.

You will have four missiles to use at once but will have to wait until new ones are loaded from the missile silos in the ground.

The game is in early stages but shouldn't take too long to finish off!

Look out for an update on this one soon.

Other rumours are that while sales of other games are still high, they need to wait until sales drop before releasing this title to keep the money flowing, bit of a tactical release rather than a development issue.

Regardless of the rumours, this Playstation 3 title looks to be a stunner! For those of you who just can't wait, check out thelatest images and videos below:

Looking at this new video and other past videos shows just how massive this game is.
The game has been in development for some time, understandably with the scope involved.
It is a bit of a shame that after such a long time in development, the cash dynamics still seem very bug ridden and appear to carry a resemblance to previous games such as King of the Road whereby when hitting other vehicles the truck and cars 'jump' around. Maybe they will update this before launch.

Speaking of the launch date, this was planned for release sometime in November, but this has since slipped. The new date is given as Q1 2010, a sensible but annoyingly vague range.

Looking at the new video, it seems clear the game will live up to the expectations, with add-on packs in the planning.
